I'd check the bottom end anyway, and maybe put in some updated thrust bearing parts. The thrust bearing is only half of a bearing shell (180°), and from what I understand, you can easily swap in a second one from a later-model motor to get 360° of thrust surface. Some people have said that starting the car with the clutch pushed in really eats the crappy stock one since there is very little oil in there at that time. Someone here probably has the information on how to update that bearing.
