it sounds like there is a short in your wiring and thats how they figured out how to start it

Just picked up a 318is and yesterday when wE were looking things over in the engine bay, we foun this little craftsman thing with a button on it with two wires that clip onto the starter and if you hold the button it'll crank the motor but if I take it off and try and turn the key nothing will happen except for the accessories turning on so no crank. If you guys have any idea what the F it is, I'd love to know.
