M42 guys: Check your motor mounts!

Ive searched around a bit and there really hasn't been a thread that i could quickly find about this issue.

The other day i was under my car and saw that my motor mount stud on the subframe had sheared and split the metal on the frame. It was so bad on the driver side that I could wiggle the engine with one hand while under the car.

We all know our motors are vibrating little suckers, so just wanted to warn you guys and make sure your mounting tabs are in good shape.

Solution: welding on reinforment plates.
My temp solution: a Big washer to distribute the load on the subframe tab so it isnt all the way loading the torn part of the hole.

Ok so never track your car if your subframe is even a little suspect...




Granted I smashed my oil pan going off track, but that did not cause this. Guys seriously check your frames

i had the same thing happen to me. i bought this e30 for 500 thinking it was gonna be as easy as pull the motor and put my low miles m42 in it. turned out to be a basket case and still is. but when i pulled the motor i found that the mount had pulled through the subframe. needless to say i was very pist. but i just went into the metal shop grabed some cardbored, made a stensile of where the holes were and the shape of the area and cut a piese of metal out and reenforced it. easy as that. now im running the condor mounts(the motor vibrates so much mroe than a m20) and havn't had issues sense.

Also, the big washer ended up being a bad solution because it ended up cutting into the frame even more. So don't use a washer just fix the damn frame tabs

Just changes mine and its a night and day difference. No more stuff wring when I come to a stop. Idles a lot better and is smoother power delivery. Tranny mounts next.

Are they tough to replace? Did you have to pull the motor out?

Nope. Just take the top but off with whatever combination of extensions works best for you and undo the bottom bolts. Jack up the engine and tilt/slide the old ones out and put the new ones in. Easy job.
