The nose cones swap too, so the m42 starter with the m20 end works too.

Thanks for the info, trying to keep all these different variations of the swap straight in my head........

Oh yeah, it is an M42 starter with an M20 pinion gear swapped in. Editing previous post...it's been so long that I forgot about that.

Which starter are you using, M42 or M20?

    EDIT
You do need the starter pinion gear from a late model M20. Just crack your M42 starter open and swap that in, or just toss in an M20 starter.

One small thing to add to this. The M42 and 325i M20 TOB's are the exact same part number. The 323i is a different part number and is a different part obviously.

Bumping this. BIG help and should be a sticky.

    I'm using...
    M20 fw lightened back side
    M20 f1 stage 3 sprung clutch
    M20 Sachs hd pp
    M20 tob
    M20 starter
    M42 fw spacer.

read post #13.....IMO you can use either of the TOBs and both will work. One you use with the "spacer ring" and one you don't. Both still allow the ring gear to engage the starter just fine. YMMV, but those were my findings, IIRC.

I would have used a standard TOB, but since I already had a new 323i one, I just used it.

Like I said above, the TOB has to be the 323i one, not the 325i one. Pelican has them.

m20 seems like a better deal since it can hold more power.

...So can use m20 TOB with my setup? anyone?

    - m20 single mass FW
    - m20 clutch disk
    - m20 pp
    - m20 tob
    - m20 starter unit to replace stock m42
    - m42 FW spacer

I didnt bother with working out the M20 conversion.
If you stumble around on ebay.de you end up finding things like this http://www.ebay.de/itm/BMW-E30-E34-E...item231c6b8793

Combined with the pressure plate and sprung clutch disc from a euro m42 without air-con, you end up with an entire assembly that weighs less than the stock dual mass flywheel. (I think it came out at just over 11kg)
You need shorter flywheel bolts as well.

Even with shipping to Aus/USA you end up with a pretty cheap awesome 5.5kg flywheel.

The TOB has to be the M20 323i one, not the 325i one. Also you need the M20 flywheel bolts (the ones that mount the flywheel to the crank), you can't use the M42 ones - they're too long.
