    Weird overheating issue

Hey m42ers, I'm fairly new to my e30 and not all that knowledgeable with troubleshooting...My car's temp gauge is acting weird. When I first got the car, the gauge wasn't working at all. It also had a bunch of things wrong with the engine so I ended up swapping another m42 that was taken off a friend's car. After the swap, gauge started to work but it's a but funky. Temp goes from normal, to past half, to 3/4s especially when cruising. Here's the weird part. If I stop, (no matter if it's less than a second) and start driving and going through gears, temp starts going down. Another thing is, it doesn't happen all the time.

On the freeway, driving 70, it'l start heating up again but if I press the clutch in and let it go (same concept as going through gears from a stop) the temp would also start dropping. (it may take 2 or 3 times sometimes)

The car doesn't feel like it's overheating though, at least to me. No loss of power, no ticking or hesitation. But I could be wrong.

Any ideas? What should I look for?

Did you bleed the coolant system? If not, look around on here and M42Club for instructions, it has been covered a hundred times. You may have a big air bubble floating around the temp sensor.

You need to grab a thermal thermometer and verify temps to rule out a bad sender/gauge/bad connection and go from there.

I was thinking of doing that next. Check to see the block and rad temp.

What I meant to say is that I did it and saw the bubbles. Let it run till bubbles stop. Bleeding it is very similar to my e36. I do the same thing.

Tighten the nut on the back of your gauge
