Can these DYNO numbers be legit?

So we have a 91 318is which we have stripped down for track racing. Current weight of car is approximatley 1900 lbs. Engine has 190k (clean like new inside), Compression tested at 190 psi across the board. Engine mods include a basic cone air filter and 7lb JB racing flywheel, We do have lighter than stock wheels and tires on the car as well. The exhaust is straight piped all the way back with a 1 foot long round muffler at the very end. Took it for a dyno run today to get a baseline for future mods and was surprised by the results. It maxed out at 140.9 HP and slightly over 140 Ft Lbs of torque. The numbers almost seem unrealistic to me, but what do you guys think? From what I've read advertised stock horsepower on this series M42 was 138 HP (not sure if that is measured at rear wheels or crank) What do you think? Thanks in advance for any input

Different dynos read differently. Be sure the dyno isn't giving you a flywheel "estimate" and it's SAE corrected. Really the only thing they are good for IMO is the deltas between car changes. Anything else falls into the category of having far to many variables.

    M42 turbo build.

Unless you cut a lot of metal out, you're not at 1900lbs.

Build thread? Or at least a couple pictures? Sounds like an awesome track toy. How the hell could you be at that weight? And I thought Cone Filters didn't actually improve on the stock system...

Not when they just suck engine bay air. The stock box works much better.

I am down to 2,348 with gutting and a skin of the hood and other bits. I am not seeing where he is getting rid of another 400lbs haha

I think this quote may go on the car. It's one of the most frequent comments we hear. Initial scales had it at 2500+, then we gutted the interior, ripped out 99% of the wiring, and broke out the plasma cutter. Very expensive dom tubing cage installed and then rescale at 1943 lbs. If I remember correctly that was with the 28lb dual mass still installed.

Forget the weight...I want to know more about the dyno numbers.

What else have people gotten on the same setups?

Is the ecu chipped and you just don't know about it? Mark D claims those kinds of numbers with his chip.

I did go back and talk to him about the correction method used. The 140.9 was using standard correction. He then recalculated using SAE and it was 130.7. Still impressive at the rear wheels for what i believe to be stock other than items mentioned. It might be chipped but I have no idea. I guess it's time to open the pcm.

A dyno is a tuning tool.
I've beaten cars on the highway who claim much higher numbers than me even at similair weight.
The only people I can compare numbers with are the ones who were measured and tuned on the same dyno at the same shop.

Even then I'm not sure if that could still be proper because the operator kept the vehicle weight setting at 3000 tuning my car and an e36. Any one if that matters?
