Picking up a 1992 318 which I believed was the m42. However, its got the more rounded intake manifold, so I believe that one of the p/o has transplanted an m44 during this time.
I baught it no start, and diagnosed it as a faulty fuel pump. Dropped an oem bosch with a relay, and started right up. It idles ok, it could probably use a tune up (slight miss).
However, during driving the first time, when i hit 3.5k it basically is a no go, and just dies as if fuel was cut off. Checked everything over, and now it pulls to about 4k before killing out.
Now I did notice something, and I am an m20 guy, so I am not 100% the answer thats why I am posting. The p/o had cylinders marked as if 1st was at the trans, and 4th was at the crankshaft pully. So basically completely backwards. The coils were labled, but paint has come off and cant read two of the numbers.
Either way, I figured just to confirm that this isn't a wrong doing of the p/o, I was wondering if anyone knew which coils went for which cylinder. I guess you can say the coil closest to the front of the car is x, and the rear most is y.
Can anyone let me know, or if they have any ideas to pitch in that would help. I am pretty sure its just an ignition failure. I have a nasty spark plug tube oil leak so I am sure that is not helping the matter. But as of right now on the schedule I have to check the wires, coils, etc all for continuity and replace as necessary.
Thanks
