    Engine "redlines" at 5K RPM

I have a stock motor with MarkD chip. It has been running just fine for over a year on this chip. Recently I replaced all front end gaskets and seals including chain guides. I noticed this problem almost right after all that work was completed.

    Here is the problem:

Once I reach 5K RPM, motor behaves the same way as it does at redline. If I am in higher gear and drop it with a rev match, it goes only to 5.5K and then instantly drops down to 5K and stays there. I parked the car and revved it in neutral and it also revved only to 5K so its not a gear specific problem.

    Symptoms:
    1) About a week ago I was cruising at 80MPH and 4K RPM, once in a while, RPMs would drop slighty to about 3.8 and then shoot back up immediately.
    2) It cranks a bit longer than usual on a cold start - has been like this for 6 months (battery is a bit weak so I didnt care too much)

    My Ideas:
    1) Crank Position Sensor
    2) Fuel Pump
    3) Chip/ECU

I replaced fuel filter in October and replaced one line. Rest of the rubber lines are old and need to be replaced too. All vacuum hoses are brand new OEM. Car runs and idles perfect below 5K RPMs.

I am open to any ideas and input.

You replaced chain guides, did you jump the chain one tooth anywhere?

That's very possible. However, I thought that would make it idle and run like crap. Motor runs and sounds very healthy which made me assume my install was correct

Have you recently removed the needle from the tach?
I did, and when I replaced it, my engine redlined at 5.7k. It was just poor installation on my end with replacing my needle, and my redline was actually unaffected

are you sure you are not a tooth retarded on time? Heres what I would check first
1 turn engine to TDC on crank
2 pull valve cover and check cams to ensure #1 lobes are facing each other @45 degrees and the square backs on the cams line flat with the head.

hhhmm I know cams were at TDC for sure and so was harmonic balancer. However, its possible that I did not install sprockets 100% correctly. Would that cause such behavior?

the fact that you updated the timing cause and immediately after this problem arose makes me think you are off on time. Yes it could cause this.

Was it fine for a while and then this symptom started?

The very first time I drove it, it was funky in 1st, then I went all the way to 7K in 2nd and it was fine. I did not drive it hard for 2 or 3 weeks. Then this weekend I was messing around and noticed the problem.
