    rebuilding an m42 head

So as the title says, I may have finally "may" is the key term found a head for my m42, in the land of OZ they are rare as rocking horse poo.

Anyway the beginning... I have a 1990 318is which I acquired with "bent valves" that turned out the previous owner put the intake cam & tray on the exhaust side & vice versa. This resulted in the most chewed up cams I've ever seen & multiple bent valves.

I've now found another head after looking for close to a year & having had two others bought out from under me, this one has bent valves also but good cams & trays.

Rebuilding this head I'm looking at:

New valves +1mm oversized most likley supertech valves
Should I be replacing the valve springs?
I have all new stem seals
& a victor reinz head gasket(After seeing lots of bad stories I may buy a goetze)
I've got a full gasket & seal kit
I plan to get the head resurfaced just for peace of mind

Is this anything else I should be doing, or changing? I want to get this engine running & see how healthy it is, it hasn't been run in 8yrs which is a worry but pulling it down aside from the head it seems in good health.

My ultimate goal is to get a JakeB turbo kit fitted to this car & have it set up as a fun little e30 as it should be.

    Cheers
    Ant

Stock valves should be fine unless you really want to go with something oversized. The springs will probably be fine as well, but then again you could go with supertech springs too. its all about budget really

If you want to stick with stock valves I have a full set Id be willing to send you.

For the HG go with goetz for sure.

Have the head surfaced, new stem seals and you should be ready to go. GL!

Wicked once I have set in stone I've got this head I'll let you know about the valves. Fingers crossed I get it.

I'm on the typical project car "budget" which is if cost go up too much it just slow the build down, I recently bought unnecessary parts like wilwood brakes which are over kill but look mighty pretty.

Ok new head arrived looks to be in great shape, pulled both cams & trays was surprised how clean it is.

It was sold as "bent valves, from being knocked over" but there is two chain marks in the timing chain area which leads me to think the chain either snapped or the guides failed.

I plan to get it surfaced & pressure tested, I'm going to go with supertech valves 1 piece valves staying the standard size. My question is can I retain the standard springs or go the double valve spring set up? If I go the double valve spring can they be run on what at current is a "standard" motor?

The next question is, I'm getting the block bored 0.50" over so a to a bore of 84.50mm, I came across "Maxsill" pistons haven't really heard of them though? Any recommendations on pistons to use, retaining the standard compression but just 0.50mm over. The current pistons have some slap, not a crazy amount but whilst the engine is completely pulled down it is just makes more sense to do it now.

I'll be putting in new main, & rod bearings whilst its apart. Once its together, I'll be speaking to JakeB to go the turbo kit
