Head Gasket and head stud recommendation

Needing to do a head gasket in my 91 318i m42 and am planning to boost in the future. I tried to find an arp kit for head bolts/studs with no avail was looking for help with that as well as what brand of head gasket to use? Any help is great

go MLS .140 over and m5x headstuds from arp. fyi all m5x head studs from arp will fit m42 you just end up with two extra.

I've heard bad things about the .140 gasket interfering with the profile gasket in front causing it to leak. Have you experienced that?
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

i went MLS on my last engine and I never had that problem. The MLS does not interfere with the profile gasket at all it just makes extra space. You can compensate for that little bit of space with RTV.

Im not sure that a .140 would be different than a .098 but thats my experience with it

VAC Motorsport sell Cometic head gaskets and ARP head studs.

I have used both and never had a problem

Whenever your cylinder head is coming off, you're switching to forced induction, or if you are simply preparing to drive your car hard, you will need to replace your OEM hardware; we highly recommend switching to ARP Head Studs for far superior race-grade hardware. ARP’s Head Stud Kits greatly improve reliability by helping to eliminate movement of the cylinder head and the gasket failure caused by inferior OEM head-bolt stretch. This is the #1 cause of premature head gasket failure, especially on boosted or high output engines. Converting to ARP head studs will not only give added strength and reliability when it's needed most, but also provide the most accurate torque readings because these studs don’t “twist” into the block; all clamping forces are on one axis, and there is less force exerted on the normally stressed threads of the block. This increases block and hardware life and typically makes the head easier to properly install to the block. Especially in the time crunch of racing, when engines are disassembled frequently, studs make removing and installing the cylinder head onto the block a much easier task. By allowing the studs to act as a guide on to the head, your head slides on and off and also ensures proper alignment of the head and gasket for the same reason.

DJ, curious...why do you recommend .140?

            Thanks

I dont actually. The way I see it, thicker head gaskets are kind of a cheap way to reduce compression. Dont get me wrong, It works really well and there are alot of High output engines using them. m5x s5x ect. But for me if I were going about it I would get the correct pistons.

Size of MLS all depends on what compression you want to end up at. Ideally a .140 is the biggest most common size cometic makes and it will reduce compression to around 9:1 I believe.

my F/I m42 is on a stock headgasket.
