    M42 head question

I know this May be a stupid question but I thought I may ask sense I bought this head. I have a 91 318is that the head cracked on here a few mounts ago. So I bought a head from a fellow on here but it's was out if a 318i.
Is the m42 head the same for the 318is and the 318i. I didn't know if the( is )may have bigger valve such as a 7mm and the ( I ) had 6mm valves.

Yes they are the same. Even if the heads have the different valve sizes it wont matter.

Thanks man. I've got a few more questions. I'm getting the head rebuilt a a local shop so while waiting I'm gonna buy my head bolts head gaskets and ext. Does anyone recomend a specific head gasket and head bolts. I was gonna but all parts off of blunt tech. Is that a good site to buy bmw parts. I just don't want to go oem because it's so expensive

Yes, Blunttech is a great place to buy parts. Steve is an enthusiast with several E30's including a 318is. steve@blunttech.com for a direct email to the man.

You can check part #'s etc ... on www.realoem.com

Hold on I'll send the link to the parts I was looking at and see what you think. Cause it would be a shame to put this head on with these parts an they not hold up.

Get a goetz head gasket and stock bolts are fine. Profile gasket also

i see a VR head gasket set but not a Goetz set. Goetz just has the head gasket. i want the whole set but don't want a crappy head set. is VR gasket set crap because people are giving them bad reviews

Usually if you talk to blunt he'll out a kit together for you with the goetz gasket. The profile gasket is the rubber gasket that sits between the top and bottom of the timing case covers

Number 4 in the pic is the profile gasket

I personally have never had an issues with the victor reinze head gasket but I've had issues with there other gaskets. Mainly vale cover and intake manifold gaskets.

Good call on getting the Goetze HG. Probably paranoia in doubting the VR gasket, but some of their stuff just seems off.

As far as head bolts they appear to be the correct ones, however shipping can be brutal from ECS. I suggest you go to a site such as authoausAZ or another that has free shipping on orders over an amount (usually $50) to get plain jane parts.

You can also reuse the washers AFAIK.

Austin - there are a number of places to get parts and information on what should be done. At a minimum if you are replacing a worn head then: new goetz gasket, bolts, reuse the washers as you intend to do. How is the timing system look? Are the sprockets pointy? Has the tensioner been replaced? To remove the head you are going to need all new timing cover gaskets and should probably redo the profile gasket ... I just redid my M42 top and bottom. I ordered a top and bottom gasket kit from blunttech and had them include the goetz gasket along with the order (I have a VR headgasket you can have for free). Take a look at the links below and they offer some solid advice for any M42 owner.

R3Vlimited has a more active forum and BMWMan91 is a form mod/siteowner of M42club.com ... you can learn alot by searching through those forums on here and on M42club.

All that minus sprockets should be included in the kit he's getting. It's just victor reinze is sketchy sometimes. Unless you're goning Ono do your timing system at the same time which is how I did mine about 2 years ago. If you have the time and money it be easier to do it at the same time
