    Short Sump Pics

    Hey Guys,

I know its been done but i am struggling to find pics and/or instructions what everyone did to shorten there cast sump.
Its a cut off the lower ~25mm but other issues etc that need to be overcome.

I have an M44 but the M42 sumps in the E36 were the same.

    Does anyone have any pics?

    Thanks,
    Taffy

You would probably have better luck looking at M50 sumps. Same idea, just shorter engine.

You have to make a kickout on the side to make up for the lost volume from trimming the pan shorter. The oil pickup needs to be modified to be shorter as well.

      Guys, cut down is complete.
Some pics attached if anyone else wants to do in the future.

      Cheers,

How much clearance did you gain and how much oil capacity did you lose?
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

I ended up cutting off approx between 20 and 25mm, sump is slightly pulled up but thats ok.

          A couple more pics:

Also have to shorten the oil pick up, i sleeved it rather then butt weld. Didnt get the lower mounting bolt to line up again but its not moving so all good.

Not got the engine running again yet, playing doing some jobs which are easier while the engine is out including shortening engine mounts.

          Cheers,

Edit: Not hard to calculate cap lost, 20mm x the square of the sump. Its not alot.
Thinking about adding an accusump off the oil filter which would give me back the capacity anyway.
