M42 Road trip

The radiator is probably unnecessary as a take along, replace before the trip, sure. After all, if the radiator (probably at the expansion tank) leaks a bit you can just refill it as needed. If a hose ruptures at the end you might be able to cut it back enough to get it back on. If the thermostat sticks just remove it.Leave a comment:

the cooling system is unknown to me i have bled the coolant and everything works no leaks and thermostat opens up just fine. hoses look very new. i think I'm just gonna grab an extra radiator and maybe hoses and bring them with.Leave a comment:

Fuel pump for sure. That left me stranded once.
Also how old is the cooling system? Might be a good idea to go ahead and replace some of those parts if they're old.Leave a comment:

Fuel pump relay and fuel pump, windshield wiper relay, these will leave you in a bad spot.

If you take it you'll probably not need it!
The 4.27 should be fine for the drive. I've had a 4.45 in my 318i for over a year and have only suffered a very small decrease in MPG. Sure, it runs at higher RPM on the highway, but the trade-off is being able to easily pass people in 5th and fun burnouts!
i agree i had the option to get a 410 lsd but i opted for this because i can't imagine the vert m42 with any less guts and mpg I'm not worried about gotta pay to play i always say. I'm on lookout for a 445 always they never come up thoLeave a comment:

I dig it. Thanks! My ideal spares list is as follows:
Fuel pump/gasket
Chain tensioner/washer
2 meters fuel line
FPR line
Fuel filter
Spare injectors
Injector seals
Oil drain plug/washer
Trans drain plug/washer
Diff plug/washer
Axle boot kit/axle nut washer
2 Trans mounts
Alternator belt
Voltage regulator
Water pipe w/gasket
2 Coolant block off caps/hose clamps for heater ports
Thermostat housing gasket
Engine ground cable
Fuel pump/main relays
Assorted spare fuses
4 spark plugs
Coil
DME
Longest spare spark plug wire
Headlight bulbs/assys
Tail light/turn signal bulbs
4 lug bolts
3qts oil
Plastic tubing to fill trans/diff
2 gal water
Brake fluid
Tire plug kit
Metal/plastic zip ties
Small floor jack
Electrical repair kit
Tools as needed (duplicates of vital tools too)
Tire pump
With that stuff on board you should be able to repair everything that you wouldn't need a tow truck for anyway. If packed well the stuff should eat up far less than 1/4 of the trunk space.Leave a comment:

keeping the vert diff ratio. good call on coolant and oil. ill have all my tools in my friends truck thats driving with me as i am moving so than god for that. and first aid always safety firstSeriously. At least it'll make it easier to obey the speed limits and reduce ticket chances lol.
Make sure to keep a couple of quarts of oil and 2 gallons of pre-mixed coolant in the trunk. Oh, and a small tool set and some wire snippers (for the PS belt if the rack seals decide to blow). My trunk has all of this and more in it at all times, since that's par for the "Old German DD Preparedness Kit". Also, get a small first aid kit, just in case. You may never need it, but if you ever do you will be glad you have it.Leave a comment:
