This is where an inspection scope comes in very handy. I've been happy with the fairly cheap Aardvark scope I got a few years ago.
I look forward to your tear down/inspection results.
Not really, it's the most fragile part of the system, but it should be under $120. Best real solution is to go early E36 M42 timing case, which is a fair amount of difficulty and cost.

If the cam gears are lunched PM me, I probably have a couple of decent used sets for cheap. Most important in an E30 M42 timing chain overhaul is the deflector sprocket IMO, it's also expensive.Leave a comment:

Whoa, why are you in M42 land?
Yeah, sounds like a guide has gone MIA and the chain is rubbing aluminum. Alternate theory, a bolt has backed out of the DS main guide and is rubbing the chain case.
You need to inspect this ASAP. Remove the upper timing cover at minimum. I suspect that you'll see pointy teeth on your cam gears as well.
I will do a tear down over the weekend. In the mean time i went ahead and ordered a timing kit and some other misc stuff from fcp euro. I'm really hoping my cam gears arent shot that will be the death of me financially after ordering all this shit.Leave a comment:
