Replaced the tensioner on my car and it still has a rattle in the same rev range what could it be?

Whoa, why are you in M42 land?
Yeah, sounds like a guide has gone MIA and the chain is rubbing aluminum. Alternate theory, a bolt has backed out of the DS main guide and is rubbing the chain case.
You need to inspect this ASAP. Remove the upper timing cover at minimum. I suspect that you'll see pointy teeth on your cam gears as well.Comment

I will do a tear down over the weekend. In the mean time i went ahead and ordered a timing kit and some other misc stuff from fcp euro. I'm really hoping my cam gears arent shot that will be the death of me financially after ordering all this shit.Comment

If the cam gears are lunched PM me, I probably have a couple of decent used sets for cheap. Most important in an E30 M42 timing chain overhaul is the deflector sprocket IMO, it's also expensive.Comment

Id have to say these cam gears are in good shape?

I'd run those. Any other clues from removing the VC?
Missed your PM.

This is where an inspection scope comes in very handy. I've been happy with the fairly cheap Aardvark scope I got a few years ago.
I look forward to your tear down/inspection results.
Not really, it's the most fragile part of the system, but it should be under $120. Best real solution is to go early E36 M42 timing case, which is a fair amount of difficulty and cost.Comment

Will likely do it tomorrow. It's supposed to be rain free and nice out so I should be fine taking it apart to inspect while waiting for parts to arrive. I have seriously bee contemplating picking one up and just getting a nice one since once i graduate school it will get used a lot.Comment

I had fcp add this to my order since it appears there is a bearing in the center. Im sure its rather crunchy.Comment

I think you mean later M42 timing case- didn't the pre- 94early E36 M42 timing case
E36 also get the idler system?
It also got the $250 slider that makes me go, hmmmm mm m M54....
tnow, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george gravesComment

Yeah, there's a changeover date and an somewhat reliable way to distinguish the two M42s, but I can't recall what that is right now.Comment
