Is the starter lining up with the flywheel gear correctly?

isn't there a spacer or something that needs to be drilled out or something?

Your flywheel bolts arent rubbing, are they?

the noise is only when the starter is cranking... after car starts it runs perfect...

Try loosening the starter bolts a little bit then start/turn over the engine then retighten the starter. Somtimes that will fix the problem.

Also dumb question but did you make make sure they pressed the right ring gear on to the flywheel??? Not that they removed both ring gears and pressed the wrong one onto the flywheel.

Or did you make sure the starter gear and ring gear teeth mesh properly??

i checked the ring gear and they installed it correctly i even checked to see if the ring gear slips on the flywheel bit it dosent..
could the starter have gone bad?

5 months ago i pulled the trans out and the car been sitting the whole winter with out a trans and once the weather got nice i installed everything back up..

car starts but makes loud noise from starter while cranking..

Ok your not understanding what im saying,

Did you make sure that the starter pinion gear and flywheel ring gear mesh before installing???

It could also be your starter crapped out but i dont know how that would work if its not being used.

Also if they pressed the ring gear onto the flywheel to far and the starter is not meshing completly when your cranking the enigne over.

Why not just have a machine shop lighten the stock m42 flywheel? Sounds the simplest to me, but there must be a reason people arent doing this?

its the original ring gear so its meshing perfectly..

the m42 flywheel is made of two parts that are put together to reduce vibrations for the engine thats why its called dual mass flywheel

I have an 8.5 and there is only slight chatter in neutral, not really even chatter. Just a very slight increase in noise when the clutch is not depressed in N.

My idle is really good, except when I put a heavy load on the electrical system the engine dips 150rpm or so.

                                I love the flywheel
