    Engine rattle *video*

What could be causing this noise? It sounds a lot louder than in the video when engine is frozen, like -10F. Goes down significantly once engine is warmed up.

It sounds like the chain tensioner doesn't have any oil in it yet. Either that or its bad.

How would I be able to check the water pump?

sounds like a loose timing chain to me. have you ever replaced the tensioner? do it, they are cheap.

I don't think so, the pump was changed in recent times. Or so the previous owner said.

I changed the tensioner. The noise didn't improve.

Tonight I shot another video, this time with the engine warmed up:

If you run this right next to my original video in the thread, you'll hear the difference when the engine is warm.

That sounds exactly how mine sounded. I tried the tensioner first and it didn't make any noticeable difference either. I ended up doing the whole timing chain. Pull your valve cover and look at the gears. If they have pointy teeth its time for new ones.

Here is the link to some pictures of mine before and after.

So changing the gears stopped all the noises? I already know my top gears look as yours did. Do you have snapshots of the lower gears on the crankshaft too? Did they look pointy, or were the gears actually warn down? I'm gonna be taking mine apart pretty soon here, to see. Thanks for taking the time to post those pictures!

Yes, after i replaced all my gears and guides all the noise is gone. Here are some picks of the lower gears but im not sure they were the cause.

The deflection gear still looked pretty much new and the crank gear wasn't nearly as bad as the cam gears. Since the cam gear have a much larger diameter I would think that any wear on them would make a much larger difference than on the lowers.
