it isn't neccesarily better to run a cooler t-stat either. You can actually overheat faster with a cooler t-stat than a hotter one.

i think i get what your saying. since we dont have much choise for the thermoswitch temperature, what thermostat temp do you recommend with a 80C thermoswitch?
i think you also mentioned that shorting the thermoswitch to run full speed at the lower temp trigger was recommended.90 E30 325i

yeah, all you really need to do is connect both ground pins on the thermoswitch to the ground on the high speed circuit. then it will always come on at high speed.

75c is way too cold and even 80c is too cold for the M42 everything else is designed to run at 88c. At 75c there will be all manner of problems (cylinder rinsing, sludge the list goes on).
There is no really good "off the shelf" work around for the fan, gotta make it your self.I'm Not Right in the Head | Random Rants and other Nonsense1st Order Logic Failure: Association fallacy, this type of fallacy can be expressed as (∃x ∈ S : φ(x)) → (∀x ∈ S : φ(x)), meaning "if there exists any x in the set S so that a property φ is true for x, then for all x in S the property φ must be true".

I run the thermoswitch from a 318ti; dunno if it is different from other e36s or not. My thermostat is 88c. I have both speeds hooked up; I don't really want it on high speed when I'm just using the AC and such, and Indy doesn't get that hot. High speed also puts a huge strain on the alternator compared to low speed, which just saps horsepower more than anything else.

Why do most places recommend the 80 degree one for M42s and M5X engines?
BMW engineers are a little crazy but I generally don't try to out think them on most issues (this being one of them).I'm Not Right in the Head | Random Rants and other Nonsense1st Order Logic Failure: Association fallacy, this type of fallacy can be expressed as (∃x ∈ S : φ(x)) → (∀x ∈ S : φ(x)), meaning "if there exists any x in the set S so that a property φ is true for x, then for all x in S the property φ must be true".

I installed the lower temp thermoswitch a week ago and added a bottle of water wetter.
I haven't had a hint of overheating even with extended periods of idling. We'll see how it goes once the weather gets into the 80s regularly.Originally posted by Grueliusand i do not know what bugg brakes are.
