    Timing Chain Tensioner Rail

Started ordering parts to perform Timing refresh. It seems that Timing Chain Tensioner Rail is back ordered everywhere and nobody has it, even BMW Germany. I have been told that BMW Germany is waiting for a supplier, but there is no ETA. Part that I need is 11311727342, which was used on M42 until 1995 ( E30 and E36). I was wondering if Timing Chain Tensioner Rail from M44 (11311743262) could be used instead, I understand that M44 came with an upgraded timing case. Looking at pictures I have found on the internet of M42 and M44 with front case removed I do not see much differences. If i recall correctly, I might have read somewhere that M44 rail is slightly longer. Can anyone confirm if M44 rail would work on M42 case, and if not, would any other rail work?

    Thanks in advance

According to RealOEM, the later 262 part actually supersedes the old 342 part. However, you need 3 additional parts to use it according to the diagram: an M8 bolt, washer and sleeve bushing.

However, I am not sure if it can be retrofitted to the E30 M42 timing case. It looks like the existing pivot pin uses M6 threads (based on the fact that the guide pin is 8mm and pics of it show the threads being smaller in diameter). Since the later version has an M8 bolt, it's a no-go.

You could see about swapping in a late-M42 timing case that uses the 262 part, which is a direct bolt-on as long as you get the updated case-to-block gasket and lower case gaskets. It also has the advantage of eliminating the deflector sprocket which is costly and can fail. Changing the timing case is NOT a trivial job, and it can be done with the cylinder head left in place (I have done it a couple of times), but it is a ton of work that also requires the oil pans to be removed. Don't accidentally get an M44 timing case though. They will also fit, but they have no holder for the crank position sensor and you need a machine adapter. The M44 has a slightly higher flowing oil pump rotor which is nice, but not necessary at all for a stock M42.

Thanks bmwman91 for your suggestions. Today one of the members PMed me saying that he had a new rail for sale so I got it from him.
