Timing chain guide tensioner backordered everywhere!!!

Having trouble finding this timing components for my 91 318i (early m42) 11311727342. I talked to a couple different BMW dealers in different states and they say there are over 300 back orders for this part. What gives? Does BMW plan to bring this product back or is upgrading to a late m42 case the best way to go? I’m only like $1k into the car so I’m not too concerned with cost but it just seems like a lot of work.

IMO the late M42 timing case, or M44 one, is the way to go. It eliminates the single biggest point of failure on these engines, other than the upper pan gasket around the pickup bore and the half thrust bearing on the crank lol. Anyway, the M44 is almost a bolt-on, except for the crank position sensor. There is no bracket there, so you need a custom machined holder (Metric Mechanic sells one, but the timing case may need some modification for alignment sleeves). Both the later M42 and M44 cases use a different case-to-block gasket.

If you are decent at wrenching, swapping timing cases is not too terrible, and it can be done without removing the head.

M42 parts are probably going NLA; it's an old engine. Find what you can and get them now while you can. Even the M44 is not getting any younger.
