    transmission Labels & Fluid Types?

ok so some background info.. i painted my manual box before discovering there are stickers indicating what oil to use, i cant see anything inder the paint nor did i notice a label on it before painting (i wasnt looking tho).

what id like to know first of all is where should the label be on the box? thinking ill wire brush the paint off that area and check. if there is no sticker or its been long washed off or whatever is there any other way i can check what oil i need?

im running 80w hypoid gear oil atm which is the lighter of the manual oils for these boxes. didnt fancy running ATF since only 1 of the boxes uses it and i figure light manual oil in a box meant for ATF might do less harm than the other way around. figured the lightest of the manual oils would be my safest bet till i can find out what i need. the box is from an earlier car and thats about all i know, think its around 87 but it doesnt have the sensor holes in the bellhousing. the propshaft that came with it had no balancer either. also FWIW so far the car feels fine and gears work as they should with no issues.

I don't know what car you have, but if it is 325i, I the transmission would be a Getrag 260, which would take ATF. You should be able to see the part number on the left side of the bell housing through the paint.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

A small hint on this is the type of drain plug it has.

If it is a 17mm hex plug (wrench) use GL4 gear oil.

If it has a 17mm "Allen" use Dexron fluid.

Or just use Redline MTL in either (best option).

As to the labels Orange = Dexron

the box had no drain plug when i got it. i bought a new one which was 17mm hex with a magnet in it. the fill plug is original and is allen head FWIW. best guess is the box is around 87 as it had no balancer on front of the prop.

it doesn't matter what label is on it, put redline MTL in it. ATF is a shitty manual transmission fluid anyway.
