Stupid idea?

I need to remove the dampner from my driveshaft as my shifter is hitting it.
I really do not want to drop my full exhaust. As the bolts to remove the cat part from the manifold are really frozen. I was wondering if I hit the crap out of the dampner with a mallet till it and the studs pull away from the flange and then slide it off instead of heaving to drop the driveshaft.
Or is this a stupid idea and I should suck it up and bust some knuckles removing the exhaust.

You won't get the dampener off without removing the drive shaft.

you can drop the exhaust from the manifold. bolts will probably be less frozen, but harder to get to.
