    Clunking from Rear

Often when I disengage the clutch - particularly in first or second gear - without a bit of throttle to even it out, I hear a clunk from the back. It's almost as if the driveshaft is going back and forth.

The reason I added the throttle bit in there is that if I keep the engine revved up a little, it won't clunk versus if I let off the throttle completely then disengage the clutch. The second one causes the most "clunkage."

My guesses are a bad guibo, a bad differential mount, or just low fluid in the differential.

I know the differential is supposed to have a little play, but I think something is awry.

    Best,

    Pete

Could be guibo, CSB, drive shaft, diff mount, half shaft, RTAB's, or subframe bushings. An inspection should reveal candidates.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Yeah, actually, like a turd, I posted this thread then did some searching.

It didn't do it this morning, though. It's also not as severe as some others have described.

It actually does it when I shift really sloppily. I'll keep my eye on it though, as I suspect it's the driveshaft.

Hmmm... I get a "clunk" from my rear end when i put the car in reverse and let out the clutch, I'll also get a "clunk" with I go back into 1st from reverse. Also, if I downshift a gear and let out the clutch (engine breaking), or am really sloppy in my shifting, I'll get that "clunk" sound.

My diff, also makes constant metal-on-metal noise, above 40mph.

I've installed a new driveshaft, guibo, CV axles and front & rear wheel bearings. Though all those things needed to be replaced anyway (220K+ miles on her), none of them directly changed the nature of what I am hearing.

I've narrowed the "clunk" and constant metal rubbing (not sharp scraping, but dull metallic rubbering ), to my differential needing a rebuild or replacing, due to worn out pinion and carrier bearings.

I think I might get a new LSD unit from Diffsonline.com, eventually.
