Im working on the most ultimate gasoline saving utilitarian e30 i can make, and so I want to throw the tallest diff in there I can. Ive heard numerous 5 series may have what I am looking for but I have little as far as specific info.
tallest/longest diff that fits the E30?

No they don't. '84-8/85 production etas had 2.79's-- regardless of the transmission. Beginning in 9/85 (first month of '86 model year production) all eta's recieved 2.93 diffs, again regardless of the transmission, to cancel out the taller tires that they recieved compared to earlier cars. This information applies to State-side eta's. In Europe the diffs were optional and anything and everything could be installed.Comment

I'm actually considering swapping my 4.10 out before taking a road trip to Texas...
So, any 84-85 eta then? (I know how to check the tags and such).
And I did the math real quick, 2.79 @ 80mph = ~2500rpm, 4.10 @ 80mph = ~3750 rpm.
