Auto to Manual Swap - Trans Not Mating Up - Help!

Currently in the middle of an auto to manual swap with my 89 325is. Everything has been progressing smoothly until I tried to mate up the trans to the M20. I am using an M20 clutch and S52 pressure plate. The splines are connected as the output shaft spins when I hand crank the motor, but there is about a 1" gap between the transmission and motor. Any ideas on how to get it to press together?!

Seems like it should be simple and I have lowered it and put it back up about 4 times now to no avail. Thoughts?

    Thank you!

Did you use a clutch alignment tool when mounting the clutch to the flywheel? If not the clutch disk and pilot bearing are probably misaligned, which will prevent the transmission from seating.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
