So you can use an early trans in a late model car, but not the other way around since the sensor holes would not be present.

just buy a used tranny from the same type of car you have, (i,e, late, early)

The early trasmissions don't have the tabs on the top of the transmission that anchor the front end of the aluminum shift console.

How about you tell us the year of the e30 you are using. That would narrow it down.

And the other way around as well?

I put a later trans (by two months, big problem, go figure...) in an early sheet metal mount car.

ALL parts that could be replaced EXCEPT the shift lever itself were replaced, and the shift action is terribly sloppy.

Is the shift lever my issue?
