While both the M20B25 and M20B27 engines both use Getrag 260 transmissions with the same gearing, there are some differences in the transmission casings. ETA cars have the timing reference sensors mounted in the bell hosing, requiring holes in the bell housing for the sensors, and early ETA transmissions will accept the sheet metal shift console.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

So you can use an early trans in a late model car, but not the other way around since the sensor holes would not be present.

Sort of correct. The lack of provision for the late shifter would require the use of the early shifter with the sheet metal console.

There is also the issue of the output flange being different.

How about this for an answer: both transmissions are the same inside, but have some differences outside.

What exactly is missing, and is it not possible to retrofit a late shifter?

just buy a used tranny from the same type of car you have, (i,e, late, early)

                    problem solved.

The early trasmissions don't have the tabs on the top of the transmission that anchor the front end of the aluminum shift console.

How about you tell us the year of the e30 you are using. That would narrow it down.

And the other way around as well?

I put a later trans (by two months, big problem, go figure...) in an early sheet metal mount car.

ALL parts that could be replaced EXCEPT the shift lever itself were replaced, and the shift action is terribly sloppy.

Is the shift lever my issue?
