Early E trans into an I

Okay, I have searched and searched. There is a TON of info regarding this. In addition, a LOT of it is riddled with a bunch of incorrect info as well.

As much as I can conclude... they share the same gearing in all the 260's.

I know I can swap the output flange, as they are different diameters.

What I am not clear on, is the linkage.

I know they are different. Early E to an I, that is. So does that mean I just need to use the linkage that came off the E car? I assume they both hook into the shifter the same, but appear to have different mounting points on the trans itself.

Can anyone clear this up for me? Anyone done this? Thanks.

You can use an early E transmission in an I/IS, but not vice versa because of the timing reference sensor mounting in the bellhousing on E cars. You will need to use the sheet metal shifter from an E car, or get part 25112225369 for an E30 M3 and use the shifter you have.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
