    Shifter knob removal question

Can I do any shifter work without pulling the knob off? Such as rebuilding the bushings, installing a short shifter, or the likes?

I know that to remove the shifter knob, all you gotta do is pull it right off the top. I'd love to do this but there's one problem, the shifter that the PO put on has been cemented in place.

When I got the car, he mentioned that he tried to change the shifter knob for a more stylish one, and tried twisting it off like a screw, with a wrench. Ended up breaking a collar of some sort, and now, looking closer, it looks like he cemented the new one on once he figured out how to get the old one off.

Yeah, but don't know how you will get the boot off. With a short shifter, you will be replacing the actual shifter, the knob will stay with the old one if it's glued on. The other parts (bushings) can be replaced from the bottom of the car without even removing the knob.

If you have a new shifter and don't want the knob but you do want the boot just cut the rod off carefully. You can do all the bushings without removing the knob, it would be a little more work...

^^ well then that's good. I already had to rip a new boot at the stitches a bit so I could get it to fit over the shift knob, thats when I found out it had been cemented in place.
