    The M42 is a Getrag 240/5.

260/5 so do you mean both the 260 and the 265 or is that what the box is referred to as?

          260/5 is getrag 260 5 speed found in all 6 cylinder E30s.
          265/5 is getrag 265 5 speed found in E30 M3s.

The 265 is an old gearbox, been around since E12's in the late '70s. This was also used in the E28 535i in '85 and other years of E24's with the M30.

Wasn't it also used on a 5'er with an m20? And people take the bell housings from that, and put them on the M3 265? or soemthing close to that?

Really?? Jag used the box in many of their cars through the 80's. xj6 and xjs with the manual. All the 3.2, 3.6 liter engines anyway.
How strong do you guys think the 265 is???
I have a 95 XJR which in our great country only comes with a auto.... So Id like to convert it. In europe you can get it with a 290 but I cant find any cars in the states that use that?
Does anyone know what box the e34 M5 uses??
I think I can use the 265 but I doubt its as strong. As long as it can take the stress in my car Ill be good though so thats why Im wondering how strong it is? Keep in mind my car's very heavy, all of 4200 lbs. It makes 325 hp and 380 ft lbs of torque from the supercharged inline 6. And I plan on squezing more out. Thats why Im trying to figure out which box to use. Any more advice from you guys would be greatly appreciated!

Non-removeable bell housing on m20 getrags (sans dogleg box I think)
I have an e34 m20 driveline in my car. Output shaft is different than E30 tranny, so is shift linkage setup.
                  Below the radar...

So there's no Getrag 265 or another getrag with a removable bellhousing, that has the M20 pattern on it? I remember reaidng somewhere that people would take the bellhousing from the 1 transmission, bolt it to the 265, and use it on an M20... Maybe i'm mistaken, i'll take your word for it UNHCLL
