    Best Diff ratio for autotragic

I have a 4.10 open diff for my cabrio project, but am wondering if a 3.73 or other ratio would be more beneficial. I am looking for a good compromise between mileage and performance.

Keep the 4.10. The autotragic gearbox has a mega overdrive so the revs are pretty chill on the highway. Anything less is pretty sluggish.

      Bumped for a hijack question.

I'm yet to take a look what diff I have on my Auto (89 320i 4 door) but depending on that outcome, is the 4.10 the best to get faster low end acceleration? I'm not bothered about high freeway revs or losing top speeds. Just improving off the line speeds.

Ok. Just checked it out and my tag reads "4.45 392"

So does that read as a 4.45? So to get faster acceleration I need to go into the 3.x's? Or is 4.45 the shortest/fastest already?

The larger the number the shorter the gearing and therefore the fastest acceleration. So, yes 4.45 is the best, unless there is something closer to a 5.xx.

4.45 is one of the shortest common ratios; its paired with auto 2000cc M20 because the 2000cc needs the gearing muti-plier to move.

your 2000cc e30 m20b20 has a 168mm 4.45 final drive unit. In usa, the 4.44/4.45 168mm is the highest numeric number avail; there may be BMW motorsports catalog high ratio units for 168mm, I know for 188mm they have 4.88 avail (very expensive, but I know where it is on hand in stock in AUS).

You could install a 188mm rear diff plug and play as many others have done in their m10/m42 powered e30's; you would gain about 15 lbs to the rear axel on the larger size diff, but would be able to have access to 188mm lsd and more durable gear set if you plan on increasing the power of your e30

your best bet would be to change tires to a smaller overall diameter to reduce the final drive ratio - tires are your last gear!!!
