    Is this a GETRAG 240 or 260?

Hey guys, I pulled the Transmission out of my 325i and I bought a used one from a guy on Craigslist. My drive line will not fit. The rest of the transmission looks the same.

    Can you help me?

Should be a 260 if it came from a 6 cylinder car.

Drive shaft does have slide-collar adjustment for length behind Center Support Bearing. Compensates for slight differences and things like the harmonic balancer.

The transmission id is on the left side of the bell housing.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Thanks, where can i find a guide that tells me how to decode the transmission ID? And whay does this Transmission have the the round cover over the output shaft? I've looked at 5 different transmissions and never seen it before. If I use this transmission, I would have to swap the output flange because there are studs in it.

The round thing is a vibration damper that was installed on a good many (but not all) E30's.

Well I just checked and the code on the side says 260.0.127.90. So I guess it's a 260. I'm just confused why the stupid round cover is on the output flange. I'll have to get puller and swap it out.

I thought the vibration damper was on the driveline? Not on the output flange.

Okay, Thanks guys, Its a Dampener and a 260 GETRAG. I'm on my way to Sears to get a thin walled 30mm and a puller. Hope to have it off in a few hours.

its a damper cover. You can swap on the old tail from your G260 and use it with existing hardware. the early cars had a Guibo (flex disc) that lived inside the cover, these were the sheet metal shifter cars. studs also came out of the trans output, unlike the modern units with bolts and nuts.

If your car has the vibration dampener on the driveshaft you can always remove that one and leave the trans as is. I have removed the dampener completely on many E30's with no issue.

I was always paranoid to take off the driveshaft dampener but did so on the Mtech when I did the 5 speed swap. Matt is 100% correct, no difference with or without the dampener expect that the short shifter selector shaft does not rub on the dampener like on my 89 vert.

                      Cheers,

NO SHIT? That "driveshaft dampener" was giving me a hemmoroid yesterday while I was trying to drop the tranny this weekend on my new 325e, any idea how to take it off without dropping/disconnecting the driveshaft? It's keeping everything in place with all the bolts loose.

I second that, my auto was great. But I manual swapped my 87’ 325is and it came with the sheet metal shifter that didn’t work with the car so I got the late model set up and z3m shifter. Drives great but the dampener got in the way. Deleted it because it was a pain in the ass, to get the driveshaft on and off. No noticeable differences. Drove great for a while but my center support bearing was going out and finally shit the bed
