How to tell if rear transmission seal is bad

Mods please move, I am a fool for creating this in the wrong section.

    Hi guys,

I was inspecting my car for parts that need to be replaced, and I noticed some fluid around the rear transmission seal. I just want to make sure that before I buy parts, that it is the actual transmission seal that is leaking and not something else.

PS - I know I need a GUIBO that is in the shopping cart already.

    Thanks in advance,

    JP

There's two seals back there, the shift selector seal, and the trans rear main seal. I'd do both while you have the driveshaft off the trans. Would be a good time to refresh shifter bushings as well. That stuff isn't very easy to get to with the driveshaft in place.

Here is a write-up for an e36 trans with good pics, the e30 trans only varies slightly, the procedure is pretty much identical.
