    5spd swap pedal question

I have an airbag car and it appears that the manual pedal box I have for the swap is from a non-airbag car (since it has that compression spring for the clutch that pivots at half-travel). I plan on just swapping pedals, not pedal boxes.

RealOEM shows the airbag and non-airbag brake pedals are the same part number, but the clutch pedals are a different part number (for the obvious reason that the return spring provisions are different).

Searching around shows that running without a clutch return spring is fine, and I am okay with that. What I am wondering then, is if anyone has ever used the non-airbag clutch pedal with an airbag pedal box (forget the return spring, I am just concerned with the pedal itself fitting and connecting properly). I cant imagine there would be any issues but one has to wonder.

I have noticed on another car I had, that there was an adjustable eccentric for the connection between the clutch pedal and the clutch master cylinder, and this non-airbag pedal box does not have that. Just an observation, hoping that someone can come right in here and say that they have tackled this exact situation without needing an airbag brake pedal and eccentric.

Thank you for confirming this. Just curious, are you running any sort of return spring?
Also does your car have the adjustable eccentric at the clutch pedal to clutch master cylinder connection, or is it just a regular bolted connection?

at some point they went from a steel clutch pedal to a plastic one. Not sure of the date, but that would account for the difference in part numbers. Spring is not truly needed, so that would be a non-issue

On my old 1990 325i I did a 5 speed swap. I left the airbag pedal box installed and only swapped the actual pedals. The pedals I used were from an 87 so they were they metal style. I did not use a clutch return spring and the car drove perfectly.

              I have a 1991 Vert 5 speed.
              It is an airbag car.
It has a plastic clutch pedal.
I want to change out the plastic cutch pedal with a metal one.
I will be leaving/using the original clutch assemble box that came in the car.
I will only be switching out the clutch pedal itself.

              says that
              >airbag models have airbag pedal box
              >later models had plastic clutch petals and a different box
              >early models have metal ones
              >early model ones are prone to cracking along the side of the stamped support bracket.

So what I'm trying to verify, before I dive into changing the plastic pedal to metal pedal....

1.The plastic pedal is weak and should be changed to a metal one. Correct?

2.To switch from plastic to steel, special bolt/nut [#4] are needed. Correct?

3.When you order a new metal pedal, are you getting the older metal type or is it the newer plastic type but made out of metal?

Sorry for the seemingly dumb questions, I'm just confused.

              Thanks

                1. No, but plastic does have its complications, so witching to a metal one would be Preffered to curb peace of mind
                2. Yes
                3. No, you should be receiving an early model metal pedal since that's what the part number is for.
