my rear diff is whining..has anyone brought theres to a shop for repair and can give me an estimate? or should I buy a new one/used one?

Try a fluid change, it may very well work. If it's still whining then I would suspect the pinion bearings.1985 M10b18. 70maybewhpoffury. Over engineered S50b30 murica BBQ swap in progress.

if you change the fluid yourself then be sure to check the fluid for metal shavings. If you have chunks in there then its time to replace the diff95 7.1L 16V E36 M3

haha thanks everyone. Ill do a flush and go from there. The whining is bad around 3000 rpms and 30-45 miles per hour.. cant really tell on the highway but ill listen more closely next time'01 e46 330ci blk/blk (GF stole from me)

If the whine changes with torque direction on the differential, the cause is probably wear or clearance issues with the ring and pinion gears. If the whine is constant worn bearing in the differential or wheels the more likely cause.
The parts to rebuild an LSD (less the shims) run close to $500. And during the rebuild you will have to shim the pinion to get the correct clearance on the ring gear. Not a trivial process. A good used differential can usually be found for less than $300.
Change the fluid in the differential (I use Redline 75w90 for an LSD or 75w90NS for an open differential) and check the wheel bearings.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
