    Trans won't pop on

Ok so I just got my new m20 back together, I go to put the trans back on and it just doesn't want to seem to slide on to the dowels. It gets about 1/4" from it but just stops dead, pilot bearing and clutch are aligned everything is on correctly I don't see why it wouldnt just slide the rest of the way. The splines are all nice and clean. I've never had this problem before usually a little wiggle gets it on complete but I just can't seem to get it! And ideas?

probably a bit of crud on the pilot on the input shaft. Ive had them pop right on, and others that fought like a mother. in the end they all mated up, some just needed persuasion
I saved 15% on my Bimmer parts by switching to ...

im pretty sure its getting to the pilot, its only about 1/4" to mating flush with the block, it will slide on and go just about all the way on and then stop dead and it sounds like it hits something and stops, i just cant figure it out. everything is lined up and clean

Is it in neutral? Did you try to spin the rear output flange while sliding the trans in?

You may just need to use the bolts to suck it up, tighten in sequence top to bottom, top to bottom, etc.

ive tried it in gear, in neutral, also spinning the output flange, everything. Im kinda scared to suck it using bolts, dont want to break anything... are you suggesting i use all of the trans bolts , or the 4 main ones that attach to the block.

If it's 1/4" it should suck up just fine. The 4 main bolts are all that matter.

Sorry, but this is NOT a good idea. In a perfect world, maybe.

OP, you need to eliminate as many possible sources of interference. If you dont want to measure a lot of things, i would start by removing the clutch and pressure plate and then install the tranny. this will get your options down to the pilot bearing and the locating dowels. Start adding parts til you find it.

Ok well I pulled the clutch off no difference, pulled the flywheel off and it mates up like it should, how can this be the flywheel doesn't touch the input shaft on the trans at all? I'm lost

I've already given my advice, it's been discredited as if I know nothing.

                    Good luck.

minor misalignment between pilot bearing and disk. nothing to be alarmed about, put it on, suck it up the 1/4 inch, drive car, profit
