what size nut on early model drive shaft?

what size nut is it on the end of the drive shaft where it connect to the differential? i'm trying to get a S3.73 out of a 87 325is. so far i try 17mm and its seem too loose and 16mm is too small. usually 17mm fit like a charm.

      17mm is the correct size.

I noticed this on my OEM DS/Diff.

I used a 21/32 I had from some lathe tooling.

A 1 1/4" open end will work on a fan nut, sometimes it needs a little grinding for thinness.

A Mapp torch or O2/Acy heat is your friend on those along with Kroil if they are virgins.
