    Harmonic Balancer?

Didn't find a thread on it, so I thought people might have the same exact question..

What's the point of the harmonic balancer that goes over the guibo? When I picked up my driveshaft for my swap, it didn't have one. It seems only late model e30s have them, because all the earlies I've ever seen had an exposed guibo. What exactly do they do..?

Wild guess here, but I'm just gonna say it balances the harmonics

      Geee..! :)
Maybe I should have rephrased my question to get down to the meat..

Would I be able to run my swap without one? Earlies seem to do just fine without it, but would my late model be affected any way..?

It's for driveshaft vibration at high speeds. General consensus is that it doesn't make a discernible difference if you remove it and gets in the way when doing maintenance.

its a very expensive part to replace....
it doesnt do a whole lot.

take it off but keep it.

in function it does something good just barely. in terms of hassle its really a hassle to do the guibo job because of it.

Took it off as well... but just drove the bolts out, removed it, and replaced the bolts.

                    No cutting involved.

I suspect it was a 'NVH' upgrade...

I'd remove it also and if you want to go a bit further change or modify flywheel to single mass and lighten it a bit. That and some modifications to the shifter assembly with upgraded parts and the car will be transformed.
