My boots, on both rear axles, tore at the clamp so it's not an open tear where dirt can get in, but looking inside there's not too much grease left, still some covering the joint and around the boot. I've recently noticed it looking at photos of when I got my car, the boots were torn too, and that was 8000 miles ago... Well I ordered the boots but they won't be here until Monday and I'm driving my e30 about 200 miles this weekend. Is it advisable to not drive my car? It's already been 8000 miles, maybe even more (from the PO), and theres no way of dirt getting in there.
How long should one drive with torn boots?..

It's really more about the grease getting out and water getting in than it is about dirt. Just like any bearing, they will get noisy and sloppy as they wear out, so if you have extreme play or clicking or anything I might be hesitant to put too many miles on it. Another option would be to refill the boots with grease using a grease gun and a needle fitting before you go, and that should hold you over fine. -
No clicking, no noise, no vibration, nothing. I can put some grease there temporarily until I get the car fixed monday but I really need to drive my car this weekend.Originally posted by TSI♫ Rust flecks are falling on my head...♫OEM+Comment

Mother of god. I suppose it's different for us RWD cars as FWD and AWD front CV joints hold two purposes in both providing power to the wheels and turning. I guess that's why they wear out so much quicker and why every horror story I've read on google is from a FWD car..Originally posted by TSI♫ Rust flecks are falling on my head...♫OEM+Comment
