    play in the shifter???

Just bought a 91 318I, 5 speed. Clutch is pretty new and it shifts fine. It just seems like the shifter is loose or has a lot of play in it. In my old 91 318is the shifter was nice and tight, did not feel slopy at all like this one does.

    What should I look for?

How do I replace them? Where should I buy them from, and how much are they going to cost?

it's pretty well documented and commonly done. search in the drivetrain section.

Gotta remove the driveshaft to get access to the linkage.

            Here you go.
Loosey-goosey shifter got you down? Transmission grinding? Perhaps it's just your shift bushings that are worn. Find out how to replace them here.

if I was close i'dd come help you with it.. the first time around can be frustrating.. but once you've done it you realize its quite easy. I wouldnt waste my time changing all the bushings though... I changed only the white bushing where you shifter ball sits (the point of pivot) and everything became 100x tighter. Lift your car, remove the clip holding the shifter, seperate what it held, go on top remove the shifter knob and boot (leather), remove the rubber sound barrier and with two small flat head screwdrivers insert them in opposite sides of the white bushing (in the cracks) and intertwine the screwdrivers to be able to twist the bushing. Pull it up and out replace and inverse the process to put back in. Simple. I hope you understand my steps :p

              Good luck
