By early car I assume that you mean a 325e, in which case you can use a transmission from any 325e (up to 8/87). But not a transmission from 325i. The M20B27 (ETA) engine has timing sensors in the bell housing, but M20B25 engines use an engine mounted timing sensor. So you have to have a transmission that has the mounting points in the bell housing.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
