stuck in reverse help plz

The car has a manual trans and is stuck in reverse. The shifter moves freely and will not shift the car out of reverse. I can drive only in reverse and if I take my foot off of the clutch the car moves in reverse. Any idea what may be wrong?

Shifter moves freely as in it clicks into all the gears, or moves freely as in it moves everywhere completely freely?

Probably the second one, and it's probably as simple as getting a new circlip and sticking the selector rod back into the bottom of the shifter.

go under the car and take a peek, maybe your selector rod got disconnected from the shifter.

Clip probably fell off. Get under there and have a look.

This happened to me while driving down the road. The clip that holds the shifter linkage broke and separted. Luckily it got stuck in neutral and a cruised to a nice stop on the side of the road and waited for my dad to give me a tow.

Ordered a new clip, slapped it on in 5 minutes, celebrated by eating some tacos, and left for work.

What they said. Not a bad idea to check all those bushings and such while you are under there.

I checked the linkage and everything looks perfect, so I decided to take out the transmission. Now that the tranny is outside, and its still stuck, what i was thinking that maybe the gear box is damage?? What you guys think

mine just got stuck in reverse yesterday as well. Did you ever figure out what it is? I dont think its the linkage with mine...
