I did mine without one. I got lucky and only took me 2 stabs. My buddy's was a total bitch. Just depends.

I've never been able to get it without using the tool, and then it was still a bitch.

            Do you have sight?

No. Just make sure the clutch disk stays centered on the pilot bearing as you tighten the pressure plate.

Fun fact, the E30's wheel lug makes a great clutch alignment tool. I used an extended lug to do it under a car once. Stabbed on first try.

                  It's easy.

But if you're not taking the clutch off the m20 you're using, it's COMPLETELY unnecessary.

If you ARE taking the clutch off, just center the plate by feel off the pressure plate-
snug the pressure plate just enough to hold the friction plate in place, then
center it up using just the tips of your fingers.
Your fingers can tell when the friction plate's an equal distance from the pressure plate,
then tighten it a bit more and recheck.

It's EASIER to use the tool, but even the tool's not foolproof.

now, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves

take a smallest 3ft-6ft extension, slide one side into pilot bearing and in the middle put lots of electric take on, evenly. there is your alignment tool
