M42 vs M20 Transmission Bell Housing - Same?

Is the transmission bell housing the same between M42 and M20 cars?

Specifically, I have a `67 1600 with an M42 and 5 speed from a `91 318is. I'm curious if I can swap in an M20 and keep the E30 M42 5 speed, or if I'll need to swap that too.

It will bolt up but the M20 and M42 engines sit at a different angle so using the 240 trans on the M20 will require a custom trans brace and shift linkage.

That's what I needed to know. Thanks!

Argh. I was hoping that if I decided to swap over to an M20 that I could keep the transmission and associated mounts that I currently have. Oh well.....the M42 is pretty great for a 1600. I'll keep it!

If you can swap an m20 into that car, the trans brace should be no problem. Modifying my trans brace for my m52 w/ g260 trans took all of an hour to do.
