Dumping the clutch may not necessarily show that it's an LSD (i've made both mine and my dad's e30's write 11's at times and they're both definitely open). It'll have an S stamped/painted in a yellowish color on the bottom of the diff. I normally look for that since it's harder to fake than just switching the little tag.

edit: If its leaves solid lines from the beginning, chances are its an LSD.harry/harout

looking at the tag isnt the best way, cause it could be swapped out with another.
lsd's also have "s" stamped all around them, clean the diff to find the painted "s"
