    Drift differential welded?

    Hellow r3v, just wondering if anybody knew where or how to weld a diff for drifting. So I opened the diff but not really sure what to weld. To be specific im welding a 4.10 diff. Thanks in advance.

    You want to weld the spider gears together so that essentially both axles are locked together
    Heres a good example;

      Ok thanks a lot for the example pic. That looks like its gonna take a whole spool of wire. Lol. Anyways. My rear end dont really look like that . I think I have a cover over the spider gears. Im sure a can take that cover off. I hope.

          Sounds like he has an LSD assuming he pulled the diff from the car in his username.

            If that's true, please don't destroy a perfectly good LSD.....

            LSD's can be rebuilt without too much trouble to increase lock-up, which would be better for drifting than a welded diff.

            This might be helpful, again assuming you have an LSD.

            Early models do it better.

              It is a 4.10 lsd but its not from my previous 318is. I just picked up a shell for really cheap and a full m42 swap with also the diff thinking it was a open 4.10. But gess not. Lol

                  Glad to help and good luck! I found that page a while ago, I'm planning on doing the rebuild on a 3.73 myself.

                    If your lsd unit is a 168mm I suggest selling it and buying a 188mm lsd in same ratio to build up.

                    Bmw designed some adjustability in the 188mm lsd; the 168mm has no such design and the top cap also fractures easily. The capsule of both 168mm and 210mm have to be bored to accommodate more plates- the 188mm does not as has a dead spacer inside already.

                      How can one tell if an LSD has the 168mm or 188mm (part?) design? I assume that the 168mm. 188mm and 210mm ones you mention are the small, medium and large case diff's?
