Hammering/vibration noise against trans tunnel (auto)

    Got a 87 325e automatic.

Im getting a really loud hammering/vibration sound on the tranny tunnel under acceleration. I can put my hand on the tranny tunnel near the floor board and can really feel it like someones hitting it with a hammer. Any ideas of what to look for when I jack it up to look? (i have new tranny and engine mounts on order).

Last time I was under there I also didnt see a guibo...Does the auto of this year not have one? I looked between the driveshaft and the transmission and its metal bolted to metal.

That sounds exactly like a failed CSB, which in turn is cause by binding u-joints in the drive shaft. Replace both.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

And stop driving it before it takes the pinion and yoke.

Thanks, I did a bit more searching around and that does seem to be the issue. Given it has over 200k on it im not surprised. I have the bentley and will start taking it apart this weekend.

          So, two more questions:

          1. If the driveshaft is worn out could I take it to a driveshaft repair place and just have the ends replaced? Its hard finding any e30's around here for parts.

          2. Should this car have a guibo? There isnt one on it. From what I could read most autos didnt have one.

Got it fixed. The CSB was fine. It was the transmission mounts that were bad. They were completely separated. I also have new motor mounts going in soon.

my problem got alleivated slightly by new tranny mounts( i had the same problem). I just finished my 5 speed swap and upon removal of my autovdriveshaft my u-joints were totally shot, so while the problem is occuring your u-joints may be FUBAR'd
