What additive will stop the leaking LSD?

    Help!

Anyone know if there is an additive I can put into the LSD of a 1988 325iC? It is not the drain plug that is leaking...I verified that. I don't want to mess up the limited slip gearing. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Nothing.

Either leaking from the cover or the speed sensor or half shafts.

Clean it and locate where it's coming from. Speed sensor is a simple o ring, cover is easy to, half shafts are just seals they're simple just a bit more work.

I doubt there is really any additive that can actually stop a leak that has already occurred. if it is leaking bad, I suggest getting it resealed. If it is an extremely slow leak, you could try some stuff from your local hardware store. In my experience, it's total junk unless your leak is very small.

Just something to swell the rubber a little bit is what I was thinking. If they swell too much, then I would take it all apart and reseal it. I am just trying to put it off since I just started a new job and time is very tight.

Depends on what's leaking and how it's leaking.

Take a moment and find out, could be as simple as the speed sensor... And that's a 5 min and 50cent job.

I would add new seals and gaskets. But that's just me.

Afternoons work and not a huge cost. If you really want to save the LS unit, do it right.

New seals and gasket doesn't cost much...AT ALL. Just replace it.

I wouldn't put anything in my diff, engine, trans that would make gaskets swell up...That's just being lazy and not fixing the problem.

I have brand new spare seals and fluid if you're needing them.

Elbow grease. Be sure you check the tolerances on the output shafts before you bolt it back up under the car.

If it's not leaking from the pinion seal, (driveshaft flange) it's easy.

                            the adding of of:

                            Labor (~ 3-5 hours)
                            +
new parts (seals x3, O rings x3, surface gasket x1)

                            not leaking rear end.

For a non-worn and non-ancient rear end its quite a lot more hours and parts.
