    getrag 260 whine

    I did some searching, I got some information however Im hoping someone could pinpoint my exact issue.

    Im going to assume I need to rebuild or get another transmission.

    I just received an s52 swapped e30 with a getrag 260 (bought knowing it had a transmission problem)

    The car WHINES really loudly, especially in 5th on the highway.

    However it doesn't whine in 4th gear at all, and is silent on decel so it seems to only be throttle derived.

    also the TOB rattles really badly at idle (im guessing a separate problem)

    Any ideas what this could be exactly or if it could be remedied more affordable than anticipated?

    not too sure about your issue, but you can probably pick up a new g260 for really cheap - found mine for $90 (i got pretty lucky), but i'm guessing you'll be able find something under 150

        At idle with clutch pushed in would be your TOB, with clutch out it would be either input shaft bearing or layshaft/countershaft bearing...the getrag rattle. As for the whining in 5th gear...does it do it in any other gear? It should happen in all gears besides 4th. If its what I'm thinking it is then the reason the whine does not happen in 4th gear is because 4th gear is 1:1 and power doesn't go through the layshaft/countershaft so the input shaft and output shaft are spinning at same speed/locked together. The bearing in between input/output shafts is not moving.

        If you have the Bentley manual check out chapter 9. Also, check out my thread I made where I disassembled a G260.

          Thanks so much, yeah every gear but 4th. So that seems to be the culprit.

            So unless you want to open up your trans and replace that bearing then I would just get another G260
