I didnt do anything! All I did was loosen up some bolts lol. Btw, the exhaust doesnt line up perfect on my car either but it was givin me trouble getting it put on the end of my cat. And yes, there are gaskets that go between the 2 sections.

I don't think the Z4 3.0 is that difficult. Granted I haven't driven an e30 with a stock lever in over a year, but I don't think mine is a problem at all. I can get it into reverse no problem with one hand. As far as it 'loosening up,' I think it's just people getting used to it more than anything...

Z4 lever is perfect. If you replace everything shifter related, its as precise as a rifle bolt.

        Keep it slideways!!

I replaced all the rubber in the shift lever, then put in a Z3 1.9L shifter.

Love it. Not uber-low and not notchy at all. Throw is definately shorter and more importantly no more slop. Also, with the bent shifter the shift pattern is still in the same spot, not shifted up and to the left. I would definately not go any shorter.

              1.9 shifter 4 life.

i bent my rod, and i thought the same as you, but after driving it for a while, i love it. if i had to do it again, i'd do the same or maybe the 1.9 as i have learned now that the most extreme of things isnt always the best.

I have no complaints with the bent rod - the extra effort was with the rod literally mashing against the harmonic balancer and forcing it to squeeze by it. Problem solved - though I do agree that a slightly larger box/shift throw may not be such a bad thing. - though this is the only way to keep from rubbing and wearing through my new shift boot ;)

Anyone consider using a E36 M3 shifter? Those of you in Sountern California, Mesa Performance, recommended this to me. Its not, notchy. Its not short. But then again, I haven't exactly felt a Z4 shifter. But I imagine that its HELLA shorter compared to mine.
My drinking team, has a racing problem.

Anyone have an aquarium? If you want fish, let me know.

I have a z4 2.5 and I'm pretty sure it's the notchiest one of them all, but I love it.

                          two hands for reverse?? wahhh

Mesa Performance is only good for parts you need that very day.

Otherwise they are just a couple of old men and a kid that want to rip you off all day long and sell you the wrong parts, and insist they are the right parts, although you are sure they aren't.

When I first put on the Z4 3.0 "SSK", I was having the same notchy and hard to shift problems.. (still haven't taken off the balancer... ANYWAYS...)
My wife hated it, but then she didn't drive it for a few months. I broke it in, now she doesn't even know the difference. It'll wear in, just give it a bit of time.

My z4 was so notchy and stiff I broke my shift knob one day going into reverse. I hated it.
